I Keep Trying to Earn Meaning
I keep catching myself treating meaning like a problem to solve. Like if I just figure out the right combination of actions or commitments, I’ll have it. It’ll be done.
That’s not how it works. I know that. But my brain still goes there.
The Part That Bothers Me
I think meaning is supposed to be something I live inside, not something I achieve. But living inside something is harder to measure. Harder to know if I’m doing it right. Harder to explain when someone asks what I’m doing with my life.
So I keep converting it into projects. I’ll volunteer more. I’ll start making meals that take real effort. I’ll get serious about something, anything, that looks like purpose from the outside. And for a while it feels right. Then it starts feeling like I’m just busy.
Busy is not the same as meaning. I know that too.
What I’m Actually Noticing
The moments that feel like they matter are usually small. Not small in a cute way. Small in a way that’s hard to brag about. It’s the ten minutes where I actually listen to someone without thinking about what I’ll say next. It’s making soup when nobody asked for it. It’s sitting with a question long enough to get uncomfortable.
None of that adds up to anything I can put on a list. None of that moves me closer to a finish line. It’s just what happens when I stop performing meaning and start being a person who’s paying attention.
I don’t know why that’s so hard to remember.
The Complication I Can’t Resolve
Here’s what bugs me. I still want meaning to be recognizable. I want it to look like something. I want other people to see it and say, yes, that’s it. That’s a life with weight.
That’s vanity talking. I know it is. But I can’t seem to fully get rid of it.
Maybe the point isn’t to get rid of it. Maybe it’s to stop letting it run the show. I keep waiting for the day when I stop wanting meaning to be visible. That day doesn’t seem to be coming. So I’m trying to just work around it. Do the things that feel real and let the wanting to be seen sit there, unfulfilled and annoying.
I don’t have a tidy ending for this. I don’t think there is one. I’m just trying to stay in it without making it into a thing I can win.
Keep going
